A
Brief History...
Most of the finest furniture was crafted many years ago and its original
finish has not lasted. In many cases it has been refinished using the
time-honoured method of stripping - scrape laboriously with sharp tools
and steel woo - and this 2nd new protective coating has not
lasted either. Besides
being hard work, it was very difficult to do detail work and this
process often destroyed some of the original craftsmanship.
Modern methods introduced the use of
chemicals to remove old finishes. While
this was an improvement in many ways and it meant a lot less work, it
did not totally avoid scraping and sometimes the chemicals harmed the
wood. While an improvement
on the old scrape and rub procedure, this new chemical system proved not
to be a safe method of restoring fine pieces.
Then someone had the idea of dipping, which meant completely immersing
pieces of furniture in chemicals. No more scraping!
But, as the old finish floated away, the furniture usually
absorbed large amounts of liquid caustics, which harden wood fibres,
delaminate fine veneers and sometimes cause blistering and cracking
during the drying out process. Again, this method proved unsatisfactory
from the point of view of those who love old furniture and appreciate
fine craftsmanship.
The No-Dip® system was developed in 1972 to
avoid the perils of barrel dipping.
Over the years, it has proven to be safe to use, effective for
almost any piece of furniture and is also environmentally friendly.
Beginning in 1982 in Kitchener, Ontario,
Canada, The Strippers opened its first location.
Almost immediately we began to enhance the No-Dip® System with
procedures, special chemicals, trays and flow-over pumps that have been
designed for use in a government-approved, well ventilated booth and the
old finish is removed by special brushes. No dip tanks and no scraping! The result is what we now know as The Strippers Flow Over
System.
We didn’t stop there.
We have developed systems for repairing the wood products brought
to us and for finishing these pieces the way our customers want. We have developed techniques for repairing caning on chairs
and added business and marketing systems to complete our package.
After
25 years of ‘hands on’ experience operating the business, we believe
we have the most complete furniture and wood repair and refinishing
business in Canada. |
